I am just a solder
Not a symbol of a cause
I don’t want to be a reference
For policies or laws
I am here for service
To my country and my team
I can worship God as I chose
And live the American dream
Many choose to paint us
With a single hateful brush
They can’t see the individual
When looking at who to trust
It really is quite easy
To see what side a man’s a part
Just look at their uniform
And you’ll know what’s in their heart
About the Poem – Just a Soldier
this poem is about Capt. Humayun Saqib Muazzam Khan who was killed U.S. Army June 8, 2004
While I try to stay away from political subjects, the Khan family has found itself center stage in the political battle of the decade. Since I write inspirational poems for lots of Gold Star Families, it seemed a good time to share the one I did for the Khan family. Most soldiers just want to do their job. They aren’t looking for glory or recognition, they just want to do the best jobs they can for their team and their country. For most of us, citizenship is a result of birth. For others it is a choice and for them it is almost more important. Quoting from Hamilton “We’re immigrants – we get the job done”. First generation Americans often understand the value of freedom and the importance of defending it more than others.
Captain Humayun S. M. Khan, 27, of Bristow, Virginia, died June 8, 2004, in Baquabah, Iraq, after a vehicle packed with an improvised explosive device drove into the gate of his compound while he was inspecting soldiers on guard duty. Khan was assigned to Headquarters, Headquarters Company, 201st Forward Support Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, Vilseck, Germany.
Inspirational Poetry Books
Here are some of the books that are available from Robert Longley. I would recommend the Sacred Poem journals. Reading my earlier books (especially the ones for Military, Police and Firefighter’s families) cover to cover can be overwhelming. The poetry journals are designed to give you one poem per day while you journal about what might be going on in your life. There are specific journals for grief, success, and more.

Inspirational Poetry Products
While I do signed poetry prints that are 11×14, that isn’t the size or product that all people want. Some just want a sympathy card, others may want a large canvas print, or maybe a coffee cup. There are limits to what I can customize with the options available so some products just don’t work. Please just ignore them, I know that that format doesn’t work. If you are looking for something specific, or would like to make something specific just let me know. I’m open to just about anything.
